My Journey to becoming an Expert SEO Consultant in Singapore

My SEO Story In Under 2 Minutes

I didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming an SEO consultant. In fact, for years, I was just a confused teenager trying to figure out what I was good at. Failing in school subjects, failing at business ideas, and constantly second guessing myself. But through trial and error, obsession, and real world experience, I found my path.

Today, I am a SEO consultant in Singapore who has helped businesses rank and grow through content and organic search.

I Was Clueless About SEO At First

Back in 2014, I received an unusual birthday gift from my dad—a 3-day internet marketing program costing $3000. It was completely unexpected, and I remember asking myself, “What is SEO? Would learning SEO even be worth it?”

I was clueless when I walked into that SEO workshop, but by the end of it, I was excited by the possibilities of mastering Search Engine Optimization. The instructor, one of the leading SEO experts, gave us all a challenge – to start a website around any service in Singapore and work on dominating the first page of search engine rankings for keywords related to the service.

Me and my group decided to start a cleaning services website offering cleaning services in Singapore. Within 4 months of applying the SEO strategy and tactics taught to us, we ranked on Google Page 1 for “Office Cleaning Services Singapore” and were getting enquiries.

Though we sold off that business eventually, my experience showed me the power of ranking on search engines. It taught me that SEO works if you do it right. The prospect of becoming an SEO expert in Singapore excited me. Most importantly, it gave me the belief that “SEO services can bring in targeted traffic and revenue for any business”.

Around that same period of time, I had joined my university’s minor in entrepreneurship program, where we were pushed to start our own business with other students.

While we started off customising notebooks for gifting, we pivoted to offering notebook and t-shirt printing services soon after. Following the pivot, I was tasked by my team members to work on the SEO for my company’s notebook and apparel printing services.

Yes.

I had to take charge of all aspects of our SEO marketing – from keyword research to content creation, on page SEO, technical SEO and even off page SEO.

My First Wins & Becoming An SEO Expert

Armed with curiosity and a desire to test my new knowledge (on my own this time), I immediately began applying SEO strategies to my printing business. It wasn’t easy. Google’s algorithms were (and still are!) a tricky puzzle that is always evolving. I spent countless nights figuring out how to increase our organic traffic, understanding the impact of high quality backlink building and off page SEO, and experimenting with my content strategy, much like how top SEO companies operate.

And then came the first “aha” moment. With each small adjustment I made—tweaking meta titles, fixing site structure, writing better content—I saw my website climb Google search rankings for relevant keywords in our niche. While we were first only ranking for less competitive keywords like “Notebook Printing Singapore” and “Hoodie Printing Singapore”, we soon began to dominate Google Page 1 in the search engine results pages for highly competitive keywords like “T-Shirt Printing Singapore”.

It felt like magic, but really, it was just the result of persistence and learning by doing. I wasn’t just seeing higher Google search rankings and more organic traffic—I was seeing tangible results. My company started generating leads, traffic turning into customers, and before I knew it, we had achieved half a million dollars in annual revenue for our printing business by December 2018.

Search Engine Optimization wasn’t just a side experiment anymore—it was the engine that drove all my business growth.

My First Business Challenge

Unfortunately, despite our large revenue numbers, we were making a nett loss. We had built a business with poor business fundamentals – due to mistakes like over-hiring, financial mismanagement and insourcing our printing services too early.

We even completely lost focus by starting a new business in 2019 — an art studio where people across Singapore could paint on t-shirts, tote bags, sneakers, and more.

Eventually, we shut down our printing business to go all-in on the studio. And once again, I was in charge of growing the business through SEO — this time with a shorter timeframe and even higher pressure.

The Turning Point: A Different Kind Of SEO Strategy

A typical SEO consultant might have helped us rank for keywords like “Art Jamming Singapore”, “T-Shirt Painting Singapore”, or “Tote Bag Painting Singapore” — keywords with decent search volume, but low purchase intent. These searches would bring in people spending $30 to $60 per session.

But I knew that wasn’t going to move the needle.

That is when I decided to take a completely different approach — and unknowingly created what would later become my Skyscraper-to-Sale™ Framework.

I started targeting higher-value, high-intent keywords like “Team Building Activities Singapore”, “Indoor Team Building Singapore”, and “Kids Birthday Party Ideas Singapore”.

Because while these keywords were harder to rank for, the ROI per client was dramatically higher. A single team-building client could spend $500 to $2000. A parent booking a birthday party? Easily over $500.

So instead of chasing traffic, I focused on building content that was better, more useful, and more engaging than anything else online — what SEO experts call “skyscraper content.” Then, I backed that content with high-quality backlinks, and optimised every page for both rankings and conversions.

By Quarter 3 of 2019, it all clicked.

Our studio was booked almost every day — corporate teams on weekdays, birthday parties on weekends. And in December 2019, we hit our best month ever: $60,000 in revenue, all from organic search.

I turned that strategy into a framework I now use for my own agency and for my clients.

If you are curious to find out how this framework can be applied your business, enquire with me here.

As our sales continued to grow, we were looking to move into a bigger studio at a more central location. Then, something completely unexpected happened – the first Covid19 cases were discovered in Singapore.

Transitioning To A SEO Consultant

Government policies such as venue capacity restrictions and lockdowns hit us hard. Our revenue plunged, slumping more than 90%. We were devastated. We still had loans we had taken for our previous t-shirt printing company, loans we had taken for our art studio renovation and high monthly overheads to pay for.

We vacated our studio, downsized our team and pivoted our business to a 100% e-commerce model.

The next 2 years were tough. 7 team members including staff and co-founders had to leave the team one after another. Only I was left to manage the entire business.

I had to tweak our SEO strategy to generate more sales for our art jamming kits. I had to streamline our business operations while minimising our overheads. With the right strategies in place, business began to slowly pick up again.

As the Covid-19 pandemic came to an end in 2023, I began to reflect on whether I wanted to open up my art studio again. But deep down I knew that art was never my passion.

Why not do something that truly excited me instead?

Why not do something that I had grown to be an expert in?

The thrill of watching my businesses grow, thanks to ranking for our target keywords on search engines, had fueled my passion for SEO. And I wasn’t just interested in ranking my own sites anymore, I wanted to help other small businesses experience the same transformation with my SEO services.

So I decided to sell off my art studio and start my SEO agency, SEO With Senthil.

While initially I was focused on launching a SEO course for founders, I decided to pivot to a 6 month SEO program offering unlimited SEO help for founders – similar to what SEO consultants in Singapore provide. As a unique part of my SEO program, however, I did more than what SEO consultants typically do, I did the SEO keyword research for my clients, came up with a SEO content strategy for them to rank faster on search engines and consulted them whenever they got stuck.

I remember the excitement and sense of relief of helping my first clients hit page 1 on the search engines successfully. Even one of my clients, who was in the ultra competitive real estate industry in Singapore, started ranking on Google Page 1 in as little as 4 months.

However, I noticed a significant number of my clients struggling to find time to do the SEO work themselves too. This pushed me to pivot and offer SEO services instead. So if you are looking for SEO help, please do check out my SEO services here.

Questions to ask a SEO Expert

With more and more people in Singapore and around the world, claiming to be SEO experts and consultants, who can you trust?

Here are some basic (and some more advanced) questions that you can ask SEO consultants before engaging them for your SEO services.

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the art and science of enhancing a website’s visibility on search engines like Google. Imagine having a fantastic store in a bustling city but no one knows it exists. Strategic SEO is like putting up bright, attractive signs that guide people straight to your store.

SEO is a crucial part of digital marketing, helping businesses increase their online presence, drive organic traffic, and boost conversions. By optimizing a website for search engines, businesses can improve their chances of appearing on the first page of search results, leading to increased brand awareness, credibility, and revenue.

What is the difference between local SEO and international SEO?

Local SEO targets a city, region or country like Singapore, whereas international SEO targets audiences across multiple countries or languages.

Local vs international SEO

What are the benefits of SEO?

SEO offers a treasure trove of benefits for businesses.

  1. It increases online visibility and credibility. When your website ranks high on search engine results pages, it sends a signal to users that your business is trustworthy and authoritative.
  2. Improved search engine rankings naturally lead to more organic traffic, which means more potential customers visiting your site. This boost in traffic can translate into higher conversions and revenue.
  3. SEO enhances brand awareness and reputation. When people repeatedly see your business at the top of search results, it reinforces your brand in their minds.
  4. SEO is also a cost-effective and sustainable marketing strategy. Unlike paid advertising, which stops delivering results once you stop paying, the benefits of SEO can last for a long time with ongoing optimization.
  5. Additionally, SEO improves user experience and website usability, making it easier for visitors to navigate and find what they need.
why is seo important for your business

Most importantly, a strong SEO strategy will increase your market share, helping you stay ahead of the competition.

When is the right time for SEO?

While you can use SEO to increase your website’s visibility at any time, the question to ask is when can you get the best ROI from SEO.

It is when you have a product or service that is already selling, and you wish to scale your business.

Having a unique selling point that sets you apart from your competition helps too. Because your target audience will click on multiple results in the search engine results pages, and you want them to be clear why they should choose you over your competition.

When should you not use SEO?

There are some instances where SEO marketing will not work. When you need immediate results for example, other digital marketing strategies like search engine marketing or social media advertising may work better.

What is the process of SEO marketing?

The SEO process involves several key steps to ensure your website performs at its best.

It all starts with keyword research and analysis, where you identify the terms and phrases your target audience is searching for.

Next comes content creation, where you create content around the keywords that you want to dominate search rankings for. High-quality content can attract and engage visitors while improving your search engine rankings.

The third step is on-page optimization, which involves tweaking meta tags, titles, descriptions, and other elements to make your site more search engine-friendly.

Technical SEO is another critical component, focusing on aspects like site speed, mobile-friendliness, and overall site structure.

Finally, link building and off-page optimization help build your website’s authority and credibility through high-quality backlinks.

Analytics and tracking is crucial to monitor your progress and make data-driven decisions.

Finally, ongoing optimization and improvement ensure your SEO efforts continue to deliver results over time.

At SEO With Senthil, the process I use starts with identifying your business goals.

How to use seo marketing

How important are relevant keywords to SEO marketing?

Relevant keywords are the backbone of any successful SEO strategy. They help search engines understand the content and purpose of your website, making it easier for them to match your site with relevant search queries. By incorporating relevant keywords into your website content, you can improve your search engine rankings and drive more targeted traffic to your site.

Keyword research and analysis are critical steps in the SEO process. They help you identify the most relevant and high-traffic keywords for your industry and target audience. You should also ask your SEO consultant to help you identify and distinguish between educational keywords and transactional keywords in your industry.

By focusing on the right, relevant keywords, you can attract visitors who are genuinely interested in what you have to offer, increasing the likelihood of conversions and sales.

What is the role of content marketing in SEO?

Content marketing is a powerful ally in your SEO efforts. High-quality, relevant content can significantly improve your search engine rankings, drive organic traffic, and boost conversions. Content marketing involves creating and promoting valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience.

By incorporating content marketing into your SEO strategy, you can improve your online presence, build trust and credibility with your target audience, and drive more sales and revenue. Whether it is blog posts, articles, videos, or infographics, the key is to create content that resonates with your audience and provides real value. This not only helps with search engine rankings but also establishes your brand as an authority in your industry.

What are the challenges of offering SEO in the Singapore market?

There are 100s of SEO consultants based in Singapore, trying to offer their SEO services and help businesses rank on search engines. However, most businesses here are savvy—they are not just looking for traffic; they need leads, conversions, and a strong return on investment in Singapore’s increasingly competitive landscape.

Navigating this requires a deep understanding of the local market, cultural nuances, and business experience, which most SEO consultants lack.

How to choose the right SEO Consultant?

Before thinking of hiring an SEO consultant, it is essential to have a clear vision of your goals and a budget in mind. Here are some simple steps that you can use to choose the best SEO consultant for your business.

  1. Search for some of these keywords & see who is already ranking in the top few search engine results:
    • SEO consultant Singapore
    • SEO expert Singapore
    • Best SEO consultant Singapore
    • Best SEO agency Singapore
  2. Check if the SEO consultant is able to prove their abilities in SEO. by having a portfolio of keywords in different industries that they have ranked on Google Page 1.
  3. Assess their depth of knowledge and communication skills, by asking them some of the questions on this page designed for SEO experts.
  4. The best SEO consultant will be able to assess your website and develop a comprehensive SEO action plan to boost your online visibility and sales. Enquire with them and ask for their proposed action plan.
  5. It is important to ensure that the SEO consultant you engage adheres to white hat SEO techniques and best practices. This will prevent your website from getting Google penalties, which can harm your Google rankings in the long term.

How to use seo marketing

At SEO With Senthil, my goal isn’t just to rank your site for a list of keywords. I focus on driving real growth for your business’s bottom line using a comprehensive SEO strategy.

What are the differences between SEO and Search Engine Marketing?

Search Engine Marketing is also known as Google ads or Pay Per Click (PPC) Advertising. With Search Engine Marketing, you will need to pay Google each time someone clicks on your paid ads. The costs can add up quickly but you will see results a lot faster.

SEO vs SEM/PPC/Google Ads

What are the differences between SEO and Social Media Marketing?

SEO has many benefits such as higher conversion potential and long term ROI. You also don’t need to be as creative with SEO, as you won’t need to be constantly creating new content.

Social media marketing on the other hand, gives you immediate reach, but is often harder to convert. The need to be constantly creating new content to be visible is challenging.

That said, the type of business you run also determines whether SEO or social media marketing will be a better fit for you.

SEO vs Organic Social Media Content

What are the differences between SEO and paid social media advertising?

If you are looking for immediate results, paid social media ads may work better for you.

While paid ads can get expensive, they allow for retargeting and scaling when you have the budget.

SEO, on the other hand, is cost effective over time, can attract high intent traffic but lacks the feature of retargeting audiences who have visited your page.

A combination of SEO and pad social media advertising can be effective in helping you grow your business in the short and long term.

Final Thoughts as a SEO consultant

SEO isn’t just about algorithms or technical know-how—it is about understanding people.

  • It is about knowing your audience better than your competitors do.
  • It is about crafting content that resonates and solves real problems.
  • It is about building genuine authority and trust online.

For businesses, my advice is simple: prioritize quality.

If you are doing it in house, consult the best SEO consultants.

If you are outsourcing your SEO work, engage a SEO company that you can trust.

Whether it is your website design, the content you publish, your link building efforts or the way you treat customers online, every aspect plays a part in your SEO and business success.
